Travel warning

May, 2011. Travel Warnings are issued when the Lenca Global Office has knowledge of dangers that may put its citizens and friends at risk. It is advised that all Lencas take extra precaution when conducting cultural activities in Honduras, El Salvador and in, or near the border of Guatemala.

We strongly advise all friends of the Lenca, who are planing to visit the three countries mentioned above, to take extra care, and to visit the area for essential travel only. There are at least three terror groups operating in the region, making it a dangerous place to visit.

Currently, there is an increased level of violence within this region, which is denominated as "The Northern Triangle". Lenca volunteers, business owners, bus drivers, students, journalists and travellers are being kidnaped, extorted, tortured and killed. Sometimes, visits from abroad, make your local host a visible target for extortion, with the assumption that this person has international connections, who will pay the ransom needed. Most victims are never returned alive, even if the ransom money is paid.

It is not safe to visit
